Appellate Tech Talk

UT State and Federal Appeals CLE ()

I was asked to give a brief talk on technology topics that affected appellate lawyers. The subjects included:

  • Using the technology of the Texas Supreme Court courtroom, including some thoughts about use of powerpoint by advocates in oral argument.

  • The importance of making permanent copies of web resources useful to your arguments.

  • The annoying practice of some appellate courts that only tell the publisher (Westlaw) about changes to opinion text rather than updating the PDF version made available to the public.

  • How advances in free (and paid) search tools mean we can never quite be sure what another reader will find when they do the same search.
